    Suda çözünmüş olan kalsiyum (Ca+2) ve magnezyum (Mg+2) suda sertliğe sebebiyet verir. Su yumuşatma üniteleri bu sertliği gidermek amacıyla kullanılır. Su yumuşatma prosesinde su içerisindeki kalsiyum ve magnezyum iyonu sodyum iyonu ile yer değiştirir. Reçine tamamıyla sertlik iyonları ile dolduğunda rejenere edilmek zorundadır. Rejenerasyon kimyasalı olarak tuz kullanılır.
    Sertlik iyonları ile reçine arasındaki kimyasal reaksiyon aşağıdaki gibidir;
    Ca+2 + 2 R-Na+ -> R2-Ca + 2 Na+ Servis
    Mg+2 + 2 R-Na+ -> R2-Mg + 2 Na+ Servis
    R2-Ca + 2 Na+ -> 2 R -Na + 2 Ca+2 Rejenerasyon (NaCl)
    R2-Mg + 2 Na+ -> 2 R -Na + 2 Mg+2 Rejenerasyon (NaCl)
